December 2006 Archives
I know that I'm supposed to be incredibly pensive on this, the last day of 2006, but, well, I'm finding that it's failing me, mostly because this is the first time in 8 years that I won't be with Gunder and Fesser ringing in the new year. Oh well, we had a good run, right?
Instead I'm fixated on the snow that's all around me and telling the story of that snow. That story's coming but first I had to show you all the pictures I've taken. I've also sucked it up and gotten a Flickr account. I mean, why was I making this harder than it had to be? I'm a Mac user for crying out loud! Right, so here are the pics. Now for the pensiveness.
We were supposed to be on the road to Chicago right now. Remember this summer when my mom spotted me her car Maximilliano when I moved to Santa Fe? Right, well between selling 'Turo this month and buying a new car two months ago, I figured it was time for us to take her car back to her. And, being New Year's it meant that I'd get a chance to continue the string of A-Wing NYE parties.
The key word in all that is "supposed."
Damn, I feel sick.
I mean, I'm not sick, at least I hope I'm not sick.
No, I'm talking about today's Bears game. It's been over for a while now and I feel beat up and sick. My stomach still hasn't unclenched and my back is gonna be tense for a few more days. I mean, what the SHIT people?
How does Gould miss that FG in OT? How does the D even let those guys back into the game?
I'm not as pissed about the Hester fumble because, well, we knew the guy was high risk, high reward when we drafted him. I mean, he had such a case of the dropsies in preseason that he was second on the return depth chart behind Davis. I mean, I'm still pissed that he dropped it and that the D let the Bucs waltz in for that TD, but I'm pisseder about the D than I am the drop.

News from the home front.
My mom finally sold 'Turo today.
$500 was what he was worth in the end.
He went to a friend of my mom's friend's son. Kid's in high school, needs a ride, dad's a mechanic...good to know my buddy's going to a good home.
He got me through undergrad, a failed attempt at grad school and an intermezzo. He lived in four states and just couldn't make it to the fifth. He was the best thing to come out of the worst day of my life and I'm going to miss him. Hell, I miss him every day when I drive Beto to work. I know it's silly, but, well...he was a special machine.
Thank you Arturo, you were a good car and an even better friend. Stories are welcome.
In related news Kucinich is back at it again.
More and more lately I've been talking to my friends about where this country is, where we're going. Lots of big picture stuff, race in America, the economy stupid, The War, elections both past and future. Out of these discussions have come some pretty smart comments. Like CK's likening the way Americans view their government to a mis-managed football league.
"Say that every NFL contract expired on the same day and so you had guys telling fans to hire them because they threw three TDs in a game two years ago. Then, imagine that you had other guys telling fans NOT to pick that guy cuz while they might have thrown three TDs in that one game, they threw four picks in another game. Imagine that this goes down for a few weeks and eventually, before the trade deadline, everyone picks their rosters and then, stops watching the games. That's right, you don't bother to watch a single NFL game for three and a half seasons. Then, with eight games left in that fourth season and the signing period looming again, people start paying attention."
Yknow, sometimes that kid knows what's up.
How 'bout dem Bears?
Nena asked me tonight during the game if we could name our firstborn Bear Z. I said no, but we could get a pair of cats and name them Singletary and Urlacher. Yeah, looks like we're not having kids or cats for the forseeable future.
But now do you people believe? Now do you see it? Yes, this team is flawed, but y'know what? Teams are always flawed. And now Da Bears have a bye and at least one game at home. Yup, the road to Miami runs through Soldier Field baby!
But, I must hold out. Nena and I promised each other that we wouldn't buy our jerseys (Payton for me, Urlacher for her) until Da Bears were into the NFC Championship game. So...I will continue to hold out and not jinx this.
Also, with Al's unlikely win over in FALAFEL it looks like I just won my fantasy football league! I honestly don't know which was cooler, seeing Da Bears put up 42, seeing Hester take TWO kickoffs for TDs...or winning my fantasy football league. Whichever it is...thanks Al. Thank you for rising above the gutter dwelling you've been doing for two seasons to come back and beat the best team in your conference tonight, the only team not mathematically eliminated from the title. It means a lot to me. *sniff*
I mean, it's not like I didn't do some of it myself. The Stormin' Shepeards ARE on an 11 game win streak right now. I've almost totally forgotten the 1-2 start I got off to. WHOO! FOOTBALL!
long time readers will get what's so big about this...
Gen. Augusto Pinochet has died
still processing this...but in the end, he was just a man.

Football.
How is it that I manage to be too busy to blog about the football season every freakin' year?
More importantly, how have I managed to not talk about this particular Bears and Stormin' Shepherds season more than I have?
OK, before I go on one note. Has anyone seen a decent version of the Bears Fight Song out there in mp3 format? I've found a bad RealAudio version and an absolutely terrible lo-fi WMA version. So please, help a guy out here...decent version in mp3? Something I can put on Artoo and listen to at lunch on Sundays.
What has two thumbs and is going to see Public Enemy Friday night?
THIS GUY!
For reasons that defy my comprehension they're playing in Santa Fe Friday night and for reasons that don't quite defy my comprehension, there were still tickets for said show available the week of.
I'm really intrigued as to who's going to be at this show. I'm not saying that hip hop doesn't play well here, because it does. Anyone who leaves the Plaza and ventures out into the parts of town where real Santa Feans live can feel the presence of hip hop culture here. It's in the tags on the trains, the slouch in a cholo's stance or the hats sported down at the mall. But PE is a brand of hip hop that I don't identify with the headz I see rolling around town.
So I was hit by a bus this morning.
It's my first of two days off from The Minuteman this week and to celebrate I drove Nena to work before taking Maxi to get an oil change and going to Target to stock up on the things one buys from Target.
I dropped Nena off as scheduled before heading south towards the oil change. I'm stopped at a relatively big intersection in front of this tour bus. I was at the light for maybe a minute *BAM* WHAT THE?!?! *BAM* SHIT *BAM*.
Yeah, the BUS FUCKING RAMMED ME.
