Bandwagons and Famine
Well, the Cubs have pulled themselves even in the NLCS, but as my father said to me tonight "I'm worried they've scored all their runs. They won't have anything left for Friday." He's right, though it's the way the Cubs work. Score 13 on Wednesday, don't score anything for two games. They have a finite number of runs they're capable of producing.
Oh well, that's the challenge. Keeping things up.
Which brings me to my current irritation, the bandwagon. Now, I'm glad the Cubs are doing well. I'm happy for the existance of a bandwagon that folks can jump on. I'm even really cool with people jumping on said bandwagon. But please, for the love of God don't pretend like you're a die-hard fan.
Moving to Chicago within the past year or two, and realizing the Cubs exist within the past 6 months could qualify you as a Cubs fan. But please, don't stay up late watching a few extra inning games and then call yourself die-hard. Don't think that 3 heartbreaking losses allow you to understand the true pain and anguish die-hard fans have endured their entire lives. Please, enjoy the ride, it's wonderful and magical and there is room for all. But don't act like you truly get it; because when you do, you turn all of us into a parody of ourselves.
That said, I had a conversation with Callahat tonight. His RedSox whooped up on the Yankees and we allowed ourself the quick moment to think of a 1918 rematch. I think the highlight of the conversation was when we talked about Famine polishing his saddle.
But enough of that. Both the Sox and the Cubs have their work cut out for them. With that, I need some sleep. I'm totally dead.

d00d, I've _always_ been a Cubs fan. I'm die-hard right up there with you.
I've been waiting for them to get this far in the tournement for a long time. I can't remember the last time... heck, I don't even think my great-grandfather could remember the last time they were this close to winning the Stanley Cup! I still remember the first touchdown I saw the Cubs make. It was on the WGN affiliate in Topeka. And hearing the referee award the point, and the announcer go wild (Gooooaaaaal Goal-goal-goal-goal Gooooaaaaaal!). What an amazing sports club those Cubbies are.
Yep. I'm glad to be a die-hard Cubs fan.
i love you
LMAO it would so rock if the Cubs won the Stanley Cup. They have the best quarterback and point guard in the league.
I've only been in Chicago for five years, but I consider myself a Cubs fan. Currently I'm watching this series alone. I live alone, and don't have any friends within a two mile radius who even give a shit about baseball.
So I end up watching alone, screaming at the tv, raising my fists in the air and cheering by myself because they are my team and I want them to crush anything that gets in their way.....regardless of whether or not I think I am a diehard fan.
Blush. Thanks, guys.
While it may come as a shock to you, I am not much of a sports fan (NCAA Basketball season aside). But even I can feel the electricity with this year's MLB post-season. Seeing my friends the truly die-hard fans (like nenie here) finally get the tournement they have been waiting multiple lifetimes for, is exciting in and of itself.
I'm just now catching up on some of your old posts. And I think you are exactly right with the "Cubs fans passion" = "soccer fans passion".
We aren't just seeing some guys happy that their team is winning. We are seeing amazing displays of loyalty, rocking street parties, and a true sense of ownership of the team. As if you fans are saying, "These are our boys. You gonna step up to the plate and play? Just remember, you are not only playing against those 9 guys on the field, you are playing against the entire city of Chicago. So, you gonna step to the plate and play?"
Red and Grandmastah, I feel you both the electricity is pretty intense. I'm not knocking guys like you Red, who feel this is your team. (although you still claim to be a Braves fan, wassupwitdat ;) )
And yes, Grandmastah, folks are coming out of the woodwork because of civic pride. I'm just annoyed by folks who claim to feel the true pain. I've got no issues with those who feel the true joy and true excitement. Just don't claim my pain, yo. I'm a selfish bastard.
Also. . .yeah soccer, passion. . .word
"Just don't claim my pain, yo."
I think there is a t-shirt in that.
Or at least a posterboard, "hey camera crew, show my sign on TV"-sign.
